How Hydraulic Lifts Work

Hydraulic lifts operate based on Pascal’s law, which states that any change in pressure in a closed, incompressible fluid is transmitted throughout the fluid, causing the same change everywhere. The core mechanism consists of a pump that pushes pressurized hydraulic fluid (usually oil) into a cylinder, which then pushes a piston upward, lifting the platform or object attached to it. To lower the lift, a valve is opened to allow the oil to flow back into the reservoir, using gravity to lower the platform.

There are two main types of hydraulic lifts:

Hole-cut hydraulic lifts: These are traditional hydraulic lifts that require holes in the floor for the cylinders, which extend underground. The distance the cylinders extend is equal to the distance the lift carriage can travel upward.

Hole-less hydraulic lifts: These lifts do not require a deep pit for the cylinders. Instead, the pistons are direct acting and mounted at the bottom of the pit. This design limits travel to a maximum of around 20-30 meters, but is ideal for situations where there is limited space to go downward.

Hydraulic lifts generally use fewer components than traction lifts. No cables need to be set up, making it a more economical solution, especially for those on a tight budget.

Safety:

Unlike traction lifts that rely on cables to operate, hydraulic lifts do not carry the risk of a sudden fall. If something goes wrong, the lift will fall at a controlled rate, depending on the rate at which oil flows out of the cylinder.

Space Saving:

The main mechanical components of a hydraulic lift are usually installed in a machine room next to the lift shaft, freeing the shaft itself from the space-consuming mechanical devices. This makes hydraulic lifts ideal for applications where space is a key issue.
